"He served with the decency and good nature of a teacher, a coach, and a family man." — Maryland Governor Larry Hogan
When I attended my orientation as a new Superintendent in Maryland, my experienced colleagues emphasized the importance of following education bills and advocating in Annapolis. Their words did not resonate with me during that first year as Superintendent until the legislative session was over and I began to understand the impact those education bills had on FCPS.
In subsequent years, I monitored legislation closely and made many trips to Annapolis to advocate. Our Superintendents' association, PSSAM (Public School Superintendents’ Association of Maryland), was also busy in Annapolis. And it was during my years as a leader in PSSAM that I got to interact directly with the Speaker of the House.
I appreciated that Speaker Busch always made time to meet with Superintendents. I valued his unwavering support for schools and students. He was candid with us about our requests and the political realities we'd face. Yet, we felt assured in knowing that he would give his best effort to help students in Maryland.
That commitment to public education helped Maryland schools and students for many years. That is a legacy to be proud of, Speaker Busch. Thank you. May you rest in peace.
