As I listened to the “inspirational speaker” for the Rock Creek School graduation ceremony, one of her statements resonated with me and made me reflect. Anita Kent, a retired instructional assistant, told the graduates, “You inspire all of us to be better people.”
The students at Rock Creek have worked hard to achieve some milestones that many of us take for granted—like taking a few steps. These students have often faced serious medical challenges, numerous surgeries, and sometimes also significant pain. Yet, they come to school and work hard. They smile and laugh. They care for each other.
There were only three graduates at the Rock Creek School this year; yet the audience filled most of the seats in the auditorium. Family members, friends, former students, staff and volunteers who care deeply about the students were there cheering for the graduates.
When you enter Rock Creek School, you can feel the love. You can see the compassion. You can witness the joy. So how do these students inspire us to be better people? I believe it is because they help us to keep it simple--do your best, share a smile, and let people know you appreciate them.
Rock Creek School begins what I refer to as “graduation season.” Every school’s ceremony is unique and reflects the personality of the school community. It is always a joyous time. I will share some inside views of this “graduation season” through Vlogs, which people have requested! I hope you enjoy them.
And I hope you will take time to think about the message from Rock Creek School: “You inspire all of us to be better people.” May our graduates inspire you!
